A firm friend for 40 years

The wife of Ghana’s vice-president is a keen supporter of Logos Hope and what the vessel represents. Her Excellency Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur has been on board each of the previous ships operated by the organisation when they visited her country over the last four decades.

Officially opening Logos Hope in Tema, Ghana, Mrs. Amissah-Arthur recalled that in 1977, she and some university friends had eagerly travelled to the port to meet the original ship, Logos. In the mid-1980s, she returned with her husband and small family, to visit Doulos – an experience her children still speak of with fondness, she told the audience.

The guest of honour paid tribute to the ship’s purpose of bringing knowledge, help and hope: “As a Christian, I’m excited when children of God stand up for Him and show love around,” said the stateswoman, who promotes several good causes in Ghana.

The Second Lady of the nation is a librarian by profession and an advocate for literacy initiatives, so she took time to select several basketfuls of resources, and laughed with the crew that she had received a detailed order from her daughter by text message, instructing her which books to buy.

“Christmas is not far away, and a book is a great gift,” Mrs. Amissah-Arthur encouraged the other guests. “Books are magic, and they do for the mind what food does for the body – they nourish us.”

Bringing another form of nourishment as a gift, the vice-president’s wife presented Ghanaian chocolate to the children who live on board the ship.

Logos Hope will be in Tema, Ghana, until early October, when she moves to a second port in the country, Sekondi-Takoradi.
